Over the duration of the festival,
this site will be home to daily reports from one of the world's premiere
festivals. Coverage of films will be mixed with diary entries, news, and other
information gleaned from the streets and screens of the fest.
This
year's fest has a shadow covering it, with the commemoration of last year's
tragedy in New York. Several films deal with the topic of September 11th, and
there will no doubt be much talk and reflection about the event that occurred
in the midst of last year's fest.
I'm extremely excited that many films
will be appearing that I've been looking forward to for some time - Michael
Moore's Bowling for Columbine promises to be scathing and erudite, while
the doc on Gilliam's La Mancha sounds excellent (unfortunately, the bane
of the fest strikes these two films - the screening times conflict!) In terms
of big Hollywood fare, I'm pumped for Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch Drunk
Love - an Adam Sandler / Emily Watson vehicle just has to be seen to be
believed.
So, some time between now and the fourteenth, I'll see a whole
bunch of movies, many of them no doubt becoming among my favourites that I'll
ever see. It happens every year, a magnificent surprise, that freakishly good
flick that seems to come out of nowhere.
May the fest be with
you,
